The locomotive is built in three modular sections — running gear and chassis, boiler and superstructure, cab and tender — each assembled independently before the final integration. The boiler section is the build's centrepiece: a barrel-curved silver form rising above the black chassis, flanked by external steam pipes, valve gear and the retro headstock lamp that defined the Big Boy's unmistakable front profile. Every key component is labelled in the engineering documentation — cab, power combustion chamber, fuel bin, headstock, rail, train wheel, simulated car lights — because this build is as much about understanding what you're making as making it.

Two functional features animate the finished model. The entire locomotive rolls freely on its running wheels when pushed along the included track — the wheel bogies turn correctly as it moves, replicating the articulated chassis geometry that gave the real Big Boy its mountain-hauling capability. The driver's cab is fully detailed internally, with pressure gauges and speed gauges visible through the rear opening. The model also features quick-disassembly engineering: the three sections separate cleanly for transport, reassembly or display in component form.

The included Waiting Hall station diorama completes the scene. Built on its own platform base with a full-length track section, the station features a "Waiting Hall" sign, period traffic lights, waiting benches, a station sign post and platform props — creating a contextual display that transforms the locomotive from an isolated model into a moment frozen in railway history. Expert Note: Build the running gear chassis first and verify wheel alignment before adding the boiler superstructure — the articulated bogie geometry is the structural and functional spine of the entire model. Lay out all silver boiler pieces by size before starting that section; the curved barrel profile requires a precise sequencing of brick sizes that is much easier to manage when all pieces are visible at once.
